ASME
ASME B31.1
Power Piping
The piping code for power stations and boiler external piping, and the counterpart to B31.3. The two differ in allowable stress basis and in examination requirements, so applying the wrong one gives a wall thickness that is either uneconomic or unsafe.
This is an explanation, not the standard. AlpineTutor is not affiliated with ASME and reproduces no part of the document. Always work to the current edition of the standard itself and to your project specification.

- Pipe supports and thermal expansion — why you cannot just bolt it downMechanical
- Expansion loops and offsets — sizing the detour that absorbs the growthMechanical
- Expansion joints and bellows — pressure thrust and why they are the last resortMechanical
- Anchors, guides and restraint schemes — deciding where the pipe may moveMechanical
- Pipe support standards and details — reading SP-58, SP-69 and a project detail sheetMechanical
- Spring hanger selection — variable, constant, and the pin nobody pulledMechanical
